Elizabeth Conroy (née Harris)

Photos: Lynn Ryan

Elizabeth Harris, b 7/2/1823 in England was the second daughter of Thomas and Patience Harris.

It is on record that Thomas Harris' Aunt was the Mother of Captain Cook. Maybe this connection influenced them to come to Australia which they fondly referred to as "Jimmy's land" for after moving about England for many years seeking work Thomas and Patience Harris together with their nine children emigrated, arriving in port Jackson on the 11 October 1837 on the ship "Augusta Jessie" a trip that took four months.

Elizabeth married (2nd) Luke Conroy.

The Wolgan Valley Railway, c.1910

The problem - high sandstone cliffs - and the solution - steep grade and numerous sharp curves - are both evident at this location, a short distance north of where the line makes its spectacular entry into the Wolgan Valley.

Lithgow Railway

Photo: Janet Lesslie collection

This photo of a triple engine train struggling to pull only 1100 tons of coal around tight 8 chain curves and 1 in 43 uphill grades clearly demonstrates the problems to rail transport inherent from the "greatest single blunder" to "bottleneck" development in the west. This photo taken from a Zig Zag viaduct arch shows that the existing main line on this climb is on the same rail formation as the original Zig Zag.
